Natural History

This body of work has been inspired by the people and artifacts captured in colonial-era explorations of indigenous cultures prized for their distinctive arts and lifestyles. In recent times, there has been a resurgence of documentation as photographers work to capture customs and traditions of cultures before they disappear completely into assimilation.

In opposition to the current methodology of creating a record of people who live a ‘pure’ lifestyle untainted by outside influences, the jewelry presented in Natural History are inauthentic cultural markers; pageantry reflective of a society that doesn’t exist. What constitutes a pure object, or a pristine culture? I’ve taken these questions to heart and have invented a community to bear witness to, and fabricated the talismans for them to adorn themselves with.
